Martin Guptill: Faces a fitness test

Martin Guptill: Faces a fitness test

New Zealand will make late decisions on the fitness of opening batsman Martin Guptill and all-rounder Jacob Oram for Saturday's first Twenty20 international against Zimbabwe in Auckland.

Both players spent time off the field with niggles on Thursday as the Black Caps completed a 3-0 series whitewash with an emphatic 202-run victory in the third one-day international in Napier.

Neither injury is believed to be too serious, but captain Brendon McCullum does not want to take any chances with South Africa due to arrive next week to contest three T20s, three ODIs and three Tests.

He told www.stuff.co.nz: "He [Oram] is a bit tight in the calf and Martin's a bit tight in the groin.

"With such a brutal schedule, we're a bit cautious with them. I don't expect them to be out at all - it's a matter of looking after them.

"We're going to have to have a look and come up with something with the balance of the teams we want to play in the two games.

"I'd still like to see Martin continue. When you're in that vein of form you want to keep rolling him out there. Jake, it just depends how bad it is but I think it's okay."

McCullum was understandably delighted with his side's display in the ODI series, particularly given it saw the introductions of Tom Latham, Andy Ellis, Tarun Nethula and Michael Bates to the international stage.

The 30-year-old, man of the match in Napier after smashing 119 from 88 balls, said: "The most pleasing part was we have continued to raise the tempo of our game and execute better and better in each game; and that's including chopping and changing the team and giving guys opportunities who haven't played for New Zealand before."

Two more more debutants - Ronnie Hira and Colin de Grandhomme - have been called into the T20 squad for the two-match series against Zimbabwe, with Canterbury Wizards all-rounder Andrew Ellis yesterday also added to the group.

Ellis replaces Dean Brownlie, who has been ruled out for around a month after fracturing his finger while fielding in the second ODI at Whangarei.

Coach John Wright felt Ellis deserved his spot after promising displays in the first two ODIs and good domestic form.

"We would like to give Andrew the opportunity to show us his hitting power as he has not had the chance to spend a lot of time at the crease in this series," Wright said on www.blackcaps.co.nz.

Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor, whose knock of 65 off 62 balls was the highlight of the tourists' innings yesterday, urged his side to take positives from what has so far been a disappointing trip to New Zealand.

He told www.zimcricket.org: "We've got to just keep trying to climb that ladder and become better players.

"We've got a lot to learn and we'll be better for it after this tour."
