Rain continued to wreak havoc on the LV= County Championship fixtures, but New Road proved better sheltered than most as Nottinghamshire ended day three 174 ahead of Worcestershire with eight second-innings wickets in hand.

On a day where most sides were confined to the changing rooms for long periods, 63.3 overs were possible in the Division One fixture.

Nottinghamshire failed to realise hopes of making the hosts follow on as they turned an overnight total of 72 for six into into 157 all out - largely thanks to Aneesh Kapil's 41.

Nottinghamshire then reached 88 for two, with Neil Edwards 49 not out.

Only 45 minutes were possible at Hove, but that was enough for Warwickshire to advance their chances of an unlikely win over Sussex.

They managed just 8.1 overs but took three wickets for 23 runs to leave the home side 80 for five in response to 545 all out.

Keith Barker took his second and third wickets of the innings, while Chris Wright bowled England wicketkeeper Matt Prior for nought on his county return.

Somerset will resume on the final morning on 87 for three against Lancashire at Taunton - 313 adrift.

Lancashire earlier moved from 395 to 400, and maximum batting points, before South Africa's Vernon Philander removed last man Simon Kerrigan and sealed his five-wicket haul.

Glen Chapple removed both openers to rock Somerset early but the prolific Nick Compton (30no) and stand-in skipper James Hildreth (30) put on 53 to get things back on track before the latter was lbw to Luke Procter.

No play was possible for the third day in a row between Surrey and Durham.

In Division Two, Kent picked up four batting points as they closed on 350 for nine against Yorkshire at Canterbury.

Only 8.5 overs were possible, the hosts losing three wickets but scoring 34 runs to establish a 103-run lead.

England's Tim Bresnan took two wickets but could not find a way past Brendan Nash, who remained on 132no.

A draw looks certain between Hampshire and Leicestershire at the Rose Bowl, with just 10 overs in the day and no wickets.

Hampshire closed 17 short of parity on 217 for four, Michael Carberry with 84no and Sean Ervine on 41no.

Two games were washed out completely, with Essex still on their day two total of 54 for six against Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire's clash with Glamorgan still to get under way.
