Sehwag: Brutal 73

Sehwag: Brutal 73

Delhi Daredevils stayed top of the Indian Premier League table as Virender Sehwag hit a brutal 73 not out to secure a six-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals.

Delhi have now won eight of their 10 matches, this time chasing down a winning target on 142 in just 15.2 overs.

Rajasthan skipper Rahul Dravid (57) shared an opening stand of 71 with the Ajinkya Rahane (42) but after Pawan Negi broke them up, the innings faltered.

Negi returned four for 18 as the score reached 141 for six, Shreevats Goswami the only other batsman to hit double figures.

Ankeet Chavan then removed Mahela Jayawardene with the third ball of the reply, but Sehwag was in devastating form.

He took just 38 balls over his 73no, striking 12 fours and a six.

Kevin Pietersen contributed 36 at better than a run-a-ball in support as Delhi coasted to victory despite Brad Hogg's two wickets.

Captain Kumar Sangakkara and big-hitting Cameron White led Deccan Chargers to just their second win of the season following a 13-run triumph over Pune Warriors.

Sangakkara and White put on 137 runs for the third wicket to help the Chargers to 186 for four after they won the toss, with Sangakkara making 82, including 10 fours and two sixes in his 52-ball knock.

Australian White was no shrinking violet however and bludgeoned four boundaries and as many maximums on his way to 74 off just 45 deliveries.

Wayne Parnell and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were the pick of the bowlers with one for 25 and one for 22 respectively although the rest of the attack were given short shrift as the Chargers scored 95 runs off the last six overs of their innings.

The Warriors were always behind the asking rate and lost wickets at crucial intervals.

Skipper Sourav Ganguly made 45, while Michael Clarke, making his IPL debut after returning from captaining Australia in their Test series against West Indies, struck 41.

But they could not go on to make a matchwinning score and although allrounder Steve Smith smashed an unbeaten 47 off 27 balls, it was too little, too late and Pune ended their innings on 173 for five.
