Anderson: Bowled just one over

Anderson: Bowled just one over

There were fresh concerns over James Anderson's fitness after he managed to bowl just one over on day two of Lancashire's LV= County Championship Division One match against Nottinghamshire.

The England paceman suffered bruising to his right thumb after taking two blows in the field on his return to county action on Wednesday but was cleared of any breakage after being sent for X-rays.

There was no hint of any discomfort when he came out to bat in the afternoon session, largely because he was dismissed for a golden duck by England team-mate Graeme Swann.

Anderson took the new ball as Nottinghamshire began their second innings but managed only six deliveries before returning to the dressing room.

Lancashire have said there is nothing to be concerned about and that Anderson is simply "under the weather", but with Tom Smith already unable to bowl due to a hamstring injury, that seems a flimsy reason for the club's premier seamer, who did not re-emerge after tea, to be off the field. After 25 overs off the field, Anderson returned to the action at 4.50pm.

He fielded at mid-off for just one over before a consultation with the umpires - presumably over whether or not he would be allowed to bowl after his absence - and left the field again immediately.
