Lancashire were grateful to ninth-wicket pair Ajmal Shahzad and Kyle Hogg as they completed a surprisingly nerve-wracking last-over win over a Durham side inspired by England pace hopeful Graham Onions in LV= County Championship Division One.
Karl Brown made 42 and Ashwell Prince's half-century steered the Red Rose to 156 for four, at which point they looked set to reach their target of 200 with ease.
But Onions, who had removed Paul Horton with the first ball of the innings on Friday night, was the spearhead of Durham's attack as they took four wickets for 12 runs. Onions gave himself hope of a Test call against the West Indies at Edgbaston with six for 52 to complete match figures of 11 for 95.
However, Shahzad (19 not out) and Hogg (12no) saw defending champions Lancashire to their first win of the season with an unbroken stand of 32.
Steven Finn boosted his own claims for a Test recall with three wickets as Middlesex completed their third win of the season, against Sussex at Lord's.
Finn followed up his three first-innings wickets with three for 66 as Sussex were bowled out for 225 in their second innings. That left Middlesex with a victory target of 18 and they completed a 10-wicket win 40 minutes after tea on the final day.
Middlesex looked like wrapping up victory early when they reduced Sussex to 101 for six before lunch, but were delayed by Ben Brown's second half-century of the match. But when he and Naveed Arif, who had put on 62 for the seventh wicket, departed in successive overs Sussex were heading for their second successive Championship defeat.
Worcestershire drew with Somerset at New Road in a match chiefly notable for the visitors' Nick Compton reaching 1,000 first-class runs for the season - just a day too late to join the exclusive club to have done so by the end of May.
Having resumed this morning on 277 for seven, Somerset lost their last three wickets for 21 runs, Jack Shantry completing a haul of five for 58 to help his side to a first-innings lead of 42.
A 70-minute bad light delay ended any real hopes of a result though the hosts' second innings rather crumbled in the afternoon session, George Dockrell taking three for 56 and wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter a bizarre two for three in his first ever spell in first-class cricket to leave the Pears 129 for seven.
The Division Two clash between Yorkshire and Northamptonshire at Headingley was also drawn as the visitors batted out the final day to reach 250 for six.
Yorkshire's Australia paceman Mitchell Starc took three for 50 but Alex Wakely anchored Northants' defensive effort with 66, putting on 48 with Kyle Coetzer (39) and 65 with Rob White (42).
David Murphy and Con de Lange added an unbroken 52 before the handshake came.
