FT: Southend 2 Crewe 2 (Agg: 2-3)

16th May 2012, 09:42pm

Full Time Crewe held their nerve after a spirited second-half fightback by Southend and will now play either Torquay or Cheltenham at Wembley for a place in League One next season. Southend's players are sitting on the pitch reflecting on hat might have been, but in truth the Alex should have been out of sight by half-time and they were almost made to pay a costly price for their missed chances.

90 We will have a minimum of four minutes added time and Crewe have possession deep in the home half. Tootle has a chance to cross but opts instead to win another throw as the clock continues to tick down. Southend do get it downfield but Dugdale is on hand to head it back into the Shrimpers' half and the final whistle goes!

89 Crewe clear their lines are happy just to launch it downfield.

88 Southend win it back and the ball is launched downfield as the crowd once more try to lift the hosts.

87 Crewe win a free-kick close to the home corner flag and they try to keep possession.

86 So just when you thought the ties was over it looks as though we are going to get a grandstand finish.

Goal 85 GOAL! Just when you think it's all over Grant lifts a brilliant ball into the Crewe box and skipper Barker heads in from virtually on the line.

Goal 84 GOAL! Swift break by Crewe sees Powell pick out Clayton - just 17 - down the right and he cuts into the box before rifling a low shot past Belford.

83 Mohsni is caught offside and that will bring some much-needed respite for the visitors.

82 Golden chance for the hosts as a superb cross from Hills is met by Mohsni but his header from eight yards is sraight at keeper Philips.

81 Serious pressure from Southend now but Crewe are standing firm.

80 Clohessy plays the ball into the Crewe box and Eastwood gets on the end of it but heads over.

79 Southend force a corner which ligfts the crowd but Mohsni heads over.

78 Westwood picks out the unmarked Tootle in the Southend box and he has time to steady himself but shoots wide from 18 yards.

77 Crewe are still working tirelessly to close the home side down as we approach what could be a grandstand finish.

76 Mohsni flicks the ball on into the Crewe box but no blue shirt gets on it before Phillips gathers.

75 Crewe have a throw in the Southend half but they quickly lose it when there was an opportunity to waste a few seconds by keeping possession.

74 Clayton's first action is a hefty collision with Prosser that results in a drop ball ... can't remember the last one of them I saw.

Substitution 73 Crewe make their first change with Leitch-Smith replaced by Max Clayton.

Yellow Card 72 Grant is booked for a foul on Bell.

71 Great turn in the Shrimpers box by Powell sees him work a shooting chance but he blazes wide from 15 yards.

70 More Southend pressure but Harris is caught offside.

69 Once more Phillips' handling is precise as he gathers under pressure from Eastwood.

Yellow Card 68 Powell is booked for simulation on the edge of the Southend box when he was clearly fouled by Grant.

67 Long throw from the home side is flicked on and Eastwood almost gets on the end of it before Phillips gathers at his near post.

66 Southend launch an attack but this time Phillips makes a clean catch to relieve the pressure.

65 Westwood's volley from 16 yards brings a great save from home keeper Belford, but the flag has already gone up.

64 The home fans crank up the volume once again as they sense their side can turn this round.

64 We really do have a game on our hands now!

63 Crewe go downfield and Powell rifles a low shot across the face and goal and just wide of the far post.

Goal 62 GOAL! Sub Harris taps in from close range as keeper Phillips fails to gather a cross after trying to burst his way through a crowd of players in a crowded box.

Yellow Card 61 Crewe's Davis is booked for a foul on Grant.

60 It's so hard to predict how this game will end up with both side committed to attack.

59 It's end-to-end with Powell firing over from 25 yards.

58 Harris gets in a shot from the edge of the bix but it's high and wide of the Crewe goal.

57 Crewe make a break but Powell is caught offside.

56 Southend are certainly showing there is plenty of life left in this game.

55 Eastwood again as he cuts in from the right and this time his low shot beats Phillips but hits the inside of the post and rolls to safety.

54 Eastwood works a shooting chance but it lacls power and Phillips makes the save.

53 Just going back to that Southend chance, it was poor defending from Crewe and good work from Hall to win the ball back.

Substitution 52 Southend change sees Neil Harris on for Benyon.

51 Timlin's shot from the edge of the box hits the outside of the Crewe post.

50 Powell has really been in the game in the past few minutes and he drives the ball just over from the edge of the box.

49 Powell then does well to muscle Clohessy off the ball and his low cross goes across the face of goal with no one able to get a telling touch.

48 Powell than has a shot blocked on the edge of the box as Crewe start the half in scintillating fashion.

47 Moore almost makes amends for his miss as he lifts the ball over a defender and then lets fly from 25 yards with Belford making a great save to push it away for a corner which is cleared.

46 Crewe get the second half under way kicking towards the stand housing their fans who have made the long trek from Cheshire to be here.

Half Time Crewe have one foot at Wembley after a superb opener from Leitch-Smith, but will Moore's horrendous miss come back to haunt them in the second period?

45 We will have a minimum of two minutes added time but there are groans from the Southend fans as Clohessy's ball forward is aimless and Phillips gathers without any pressure.

44 Beyon gets into the Crewe box but Dugdale throws his body in the way to block hsi shot - good end to the half.

43 Westwood goes down on the edge of the home box but it's a great tackle from Barker to win it.

42 Better from the home side but they will need plenty more of that if they are going to rescue the tie.

41 Southend are pressing and Hills gets in a cross which drops to Eastwood but his volley is blocked by Dugdale.

40 Timlin tries to pick out Eastwood bursting into the Crewe box, but keeper Phillips is again alert and gathers on the penalty spot.

39 The referee has a stern word with Mohsni and Dugdale, but they escape cards.

38 Another glorious chance for Crewe as Leitch-Smith goes clear from Bell's astute pass but he tries to chip the ball over the advancing Belford who manages to block it.

37 The hosts really need to get up a head of steam going into the break, even if they don't score it will give them momentum and belief for the second period.

36 Grant lets fly from 30 yards but it's wide fof the Crewe goal.

Yellow Card 35 Leitch-Smith is booked and I have no idea why as he was clearly fouled.

34 How crucial could that be? We are talking Ronnie Rosenthal-esque misses here ...

33 Crewe are almost gifted a second goal when Belford miscues a clearance straight to Byron Moore, but with the goal at his mercy he shoots high and wide from 12 yards.

32 It's a like-for-like swap so at least the hosts will be able to stay as they were.

31 The evening is not getting any better for Southend.

Substitution 30 Southend left-back Gilbert hobbles off and is replaced by Lee Hills.

29 Southend think they have pulled one back when Phillips spills a speculative shot from Hall and although Eastwood puts the rebound in he is flagged offside.

28 The atmosphere has gone a little flat as the home fans reflect on the huge task they now face.

27 Westwood lifts the ball over the Southend backline and almost gets Matt Tootle in, but home defender Chris Barker gets in a vital block to prevent a shooting chance.

26 Southend atempt to respond and Philips punches clear from a Timlin cross.

25 Stunning finish for his ninth goal of the season to send the travelling fans wide.

Goal 24 GOAL! Crewe sweep downfield and Westwood plays Leitch-Smith through. He goes wide but cuts back inside and fores the ball into the far corner.

23 The hosts have a free-kick just past the halfway line, but with plenty to aim at in the ox Michael Timlin's delivery is poor and Philips gathers.

22 Southend win it back and Eastwood tries to get on the end of Clohessy's pass, but again Phillips is quickly off his line to clear.

21 Benyon is then caught offside so Crewe have a chance to clear their lines.

20 Freddy Eastwood then shoots from the edge of the box but it's cleared as Southend exert some pressure.

19 Gilbert plays the forward looking for the run of Benyon, but Phillips gathers on the edge of his box.

18 Corner to Southend taken by Hall. It's half-cleared and drops to Sean Clohessy but he rifles over from 20 yards.

17 Both keepers have been fairly busy - but it's been taking goalkicks that has occupied them the most so far.

16 Leitch-Smith goes down in the Southend box but again referee Darren Drysdale waves play on.

15 Certainly the visitors are looking to take the game to Southend, there's no sign of them merely hanging on to their lead.

14 Peter Gilbert launches a long ball forward, but it goes straight through to Crewe keeper Steve Phillips.

13 Meanwhile we have a break in play as Anthony Grant needs some attention.

12 Looking at the replays it would have been harsh as Dugdale was so close to the ball when it was hit - good decision in my view.

11 Strong break by Mohsni down the left and he lays the ball off to Benyon whose fiercely struck shot strikes Adam Dugdale - Saturday's goalscorer - but strong penalty appeals are waved away.

10 The ball almost breaks to Nick Powell in he Southend box, but Luke Prosser makes a timely intervention.

9 Cagey opening so far but perhaps not suprising with so much at stake.

8 Freddy Eastwood flicks the ball on for Elliot Benyon, bt Artell gets in to head clear.

7 Crewe force a corner but Ashley Westwood's kick is cleared at the near post. However, they keep it alive and Lee Bell tries his luck from 25 yards but he's leaning back and it's well over.

6 Crewe have a free-kick and Harry Davis' kick is aimed at Ajay Leitch-Smith but it goes out for a goalkick.

Feedback 5 "Crewe to nick a 1-1 and Big Dave Artell to score!!" says Lee Clarke who I assume is not the former Huddersfield Town boss of the same name ...

4 Bilel Mohsni gets in a header at the far post but Crewe get it away.

3 Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock is stil wearing his 'lucky' jacket as he paces the touchline, bottle of water in hand.

2 There's a spot of aerial tennis before Crewe get the ball down but a ball forward from Kelvin Mellor goes all the way through to home keeper Cameron Belford.

1 Southend get us under way and there's a cracking atmosphere down on the Essex coast.

Any thoughts on the game then give me a shout on simon.crawford@bskyb.com and I'l publish the best ones.
