Ajax celebrate as they move to the brink of the title

Ajax all but wrapped up the Eredivisie title with a 2-1 victory at FC Twente on Sunday afternoon.

Gregory van der Wiel scored the winner 12 minutes from time to leave the Amsterdammers six points clear at the top with two games to go.

Ajax also have a 24-goal advantage over closest rivals Feyenoord, so not even two defeats should deny them the title.

Theo Janssen's penalty put Ajax ahead in the 30th minute only for Leroy Fer to level after the break, but defeat ended Twente's slim title hopes.

Otman Bakkal scored the only goal to keep Feyenoord's slim title hopes alive and knock AZ Alkmaar out of the race for the championship.

Bakkal struck early in the second half meaning AZ slip nine points behind the table-toppers and will now focus on ensuring a top-three finish and European football next season.

But PSV Eindhoven climbed above them on Sunday with a 3-1 victory at 10-man Roda JC.

Goals from Dries Mertens, Marcelo and Memphis Depay secured the points for the visitors, who also missed a penalty through Jeremain Lens in an incident which saw Roda goalkeeper Pawel Kieszek sent off.

The result enabled PSV to record their fourth successive win as they mount a late bid for an automatic European spot.

Sanharib Malki scored the only reply for Roda, whose challenge for a Europa League play-off place was ended with the defeat.

Two goals in the space of as many second-half minutes ensured mid-table pair NEC Nijmegen and RKC Waalwijk drew 1-1 at De Goffert.

The result means both sides can still qualify for the Europa League play-offs by finishing eighth, but neither got the victory that would have really bolstered their hopes.

NEC substitute Melvin Platje gave his side the lead in the 58th minute, only for the equaliser to come almost immediately through Rick ten Voorde.

On Saturday, a Bas Dost double took his Eredivisie tally to 30 for the season as Heerenveen won 4-2 at Heracles Almelo.

Heracles' own outside hopes of claiming a Europa League play-off place receded further with this defeat, while Heerenveen have now scored 11 times in winning their last three away league games.

Dost opened the scoring in the 13th minute and Luciano Narsingh doubled their advantage 10 minutes into the second period. Willy Overtoom pulled one back with a penalty for Heracles, but Filip Djuricic made it 3-1 with a well-taken effort. Thomas Bruns cut the gap back to one but Dost finished what he had started with the sixth goal of the match 10 minutes from time.

Vitesse Arnhem remain seventh after a 3-2 win over bottom side Excelsior to extend their unbeaten run to five matches.

The visitors looked set to move above De Graafschap when an own goal from Jan-Arie van der Heijden and a Roland Alberg effort put them 2-0 in front.

But Alexander Buttner pulled one back from the penalty spot in first-half injury time and, after Excelsior had Jordy van Deelen sent off in the 75th minute, levelled with another penalty 10 minutes from time. And worse was to come for the 10 men as Marco van Ginkel completed the Vitesse comeback two minutes into added time to condemn Excelsior to their sixth defeat in a row.

NAC Breda climbed into 14th place with a 3-1 win away to FC Utrecht, leapfrogging ADO Den Haag after they lost 2-1 at VVV-Venlo.

NAC had not won in six coming into this game and fell behind to a Frank Demouge goal in the ninth minute. But they stormed back to all-but secure their top-flight status as first Robbert Schilder equalised with 18 minutes to go before Alex Schalk put them in front in the 89th minute and Jeffrey Sarpong added a third in injury time.

Third-bottom VVV's win over ADO ended a seven-game losing streak and brought them to within four points of their opponents, who occupy the final position of safety, with two games to play.

Barry Maguire gave VVV an early lead but ADO equalised when Kenneth Omeruo headed home following a corner in the 19th minute. However, the Nigerian's evening went quickly downhill from there as he scored an own goal three minutes later to restore VVV's lead and was then sent off in the 69th minute for a second bookable offence.

On Friday night, FC Groningen's faint hopes of a Europa League play-off place were extinguished as they were held 1-1 by lowly De Graafschap at Euroborg.

Matias Jones gave the home side a 33rd-minute lead but De Graafschap levelled through Anco Jansen's goal with just over 20 minutes to go.
