England players baffled by referee

England's players were left bemused by Cuneyt Cakir's refereeing after their 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw against Ukraine.

Roy Hodgson and his players endured a frustrating evening on Tuesday night as key decisions went against them at Wembley in their second Group H match.

The controversial officiating began in the first half when Jermain Defoe saw a goal disallowed for a foul on Andriy Yarolenko.

But that was nothing compared to the second period, which witnessed 10 bookings, including two for England captain Steven Gerrard, who was sent off.

Defoe said of his disallowed goal: "I've not watched it back but it's a goal, isn't it, at the end of the day? I didn't foul him.

"From what I can remember, I got away from him and maybe I used my arm but that's natural - you've got to use your arms.

"Maybe the referee thought I elbowed him but why would I do that when I'm away from a defender?"

Team-mate Phil Jagielka said: "I don't think it would've been called back in any other league or any game other than an international.

"But that's what we're getting used to now.

"If I'm JD and I've pushed someone away and then spanked one in the top corner, I'm going to be absolutely devastated to be brought back."

Glen Johnson added: "I think it was a bit more than harsh.

"He's in front of the defender, so I can't see why he's going to foul him or do anything.

"He's just held him off, which you see in probably every single football match you'll ever watch."

Defoe claimed a goal at that point would have made a "massive difference" to the game.

The Tottenham striker was also scathing about Gerrard's red card, his first for England.

"He shouldn't have got sent off because I think, his first booking, he used his arms to jump and that's it. And I got booked for the same thing," said the 29-year-old.

Defoe, who was yellow carded for the first time in his 51-cap international career, added: "You've got to use your arms to jump and that's what I said to the referee. But he wasn't having it."

Gerrard suggested referee Cakir had been card happy.

Liverpool skipper Gerrard, who will now miss next month's Group H clash with San Marino, said: "I don't think there was a bad tackle in the game, was there? And I think the referee's given seven yellow cards.

"So, it's disappointing for me because it's a red card - my first one in 98 caps.

"But we play San Marino next. I'm sure the boys can do the job without me and then I'll be available for Poland.

"I'm gutted over the red but happy with my performance."
