Chris Brunt: Hoping to play against Southampton on Monday

West Bromwich Albion captain Chris Brunt has dismissed reports that he is currently in discussion with the club over a new contract.

The 27-year-old was quoted as saying in some newspapers on Sunday that talks over a new deal are going on.

However, the attacker insists that it is not the case and claims that he did not make the comments attributed to him.

"There are no talks going on," he is quoted as saying in The Birmingham Mail.

"I've barely played any football so I'm just training to try to get fit to get back into the first team.

"If that comes it comes if it doesn't it doesn't but I still have to do my job by playing football and earning that. I still have two and a half years with the option year.

"It looks like I'm begging for a contract. I'm not sure where they (the quotes) came from. It's a strange one."

Brunt is also hopeful that he can play against Southampton next Monday.

"Southampton is a target," he said. "Hopefully nothing will go wrong during this week and I'll be fit enough.

"It's up to the gaffer but it would be nice to be involved.

"A few of us were out there yesterday (Jerome Thomas, Billy Jones and Boaz Myhill also played in the Under-21 game against Reading) so we should be back to full strength for the Southampton game.

"I have a job getting back into the first team because the lads have done very well."
