Ben Watsom: Will not need surgery on broken leg

Ben Watsom: Will not need surgery on broken leg

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has spoken of his relief after learning midfielder Ben Watson will not need surgery.

Watson broke his leg on Saturday against Liverpool at Anfield after he collided with Reds midfielder Raheem Sterling.

However, scans have revealed the Latics player will not undergo surgery to help heal his leg, which means his recovery time is set to be a lot less than initially feared.

"It's very, very positive news about Ben," Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post.

"Straight after the game we were very concerned about how serious the injury might be, and the fact he may need surgery. Obviously if surgery had been required, it would have been a lengthy and complicated recovery.

"Thankfully, everything has gone the way we wanted with regards the way we'd like to treat it, which is conservatively. Ben has his full leg in plaster, and the specialist is confident he'll be able to make a full recovery relatively quickly."
