David Meyler: Knee problem rules him out

Hull midfielder David Meyler was been withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad for Wednesday's friendly against Poland after failing to shake off a knee problem.

The 23-year-old picked up the injury during his club's 1-0 win at Millwall on Saturday, in which he scored the decisive goal, and despite reporting for duty with the rest of his international colleagues, has now been sent home.

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni will decide on Monday afternoon whether or not to call up a replacement.

Assistant Marco Tardelli revealed that Everton's Darron Gibson, who has made himself unavailable for his country since the Euro 2012 finals, had declined an offer to return, but only because he is suffering from a minor problem himself.

Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark and West Brom striker Shane Long did not train in Malahide on Monday morning, but Tardelli revealed both were rested, Clark with a minor knee injury and Long because he played the full 90 minutes of his club's 1-0 Barclays Premier League defeat by Tottenham.
