Stacy Lewis held off a strong challenge from teenager Lexi Thompson to win the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic by a single shot.

Overnight leader Lewis took a two-stroke lead into the final round and was in a strong position when she opened up a five-shot advantage.

However, the 27-year-old needed a fourth birdie of the week on the 16th to regain the lead after dropping a shot on the previous hole, before holding off Thompson.

A round of 69 gave last year's Kraft Nabisco Championship winner a 17-under-par total of 271 and made sure of the US$187,500 first prize at Magnolia Grove.

Thompson, 17, was seeking her second successive win in Alabama after becoming the youngest LPGA Tour winner at the Navistar LPGA Classic in September.

She almost got it, matching her career low with a final round of 65 which heaped the pressure on overnight leader Lewis.

France's Karine Icher of France was third, a shot behind Thompson, after finishing with a 68.
