Paul Casey was forced to pull out of the Players Championship on the 10th hole of his first round.
Casey was troubled once again by the shoulder he dislocated snowboarding on Christmas Eve.
However despite the setback, Casey has not given up on playing next week's Volvo World Match Play in Spain.
"My shoulder felt tired and tender when I made my way to the first tee," said the world number 50, who missed the first two months of a year he hoped - and still hopes - would see him return to the Ryder Cup.
"I decided to give it a go as I thought I could play through it, but during the round it flared up, which is when I decided to withdraw.
"I am very disappointed. My game has been coming around and I felt confident, but my body told me otherwise.
"My recent schedule has been extremely busy and the lack of rest has taken its toll. It's a long season and my health is the number one priority.
"I am going to re-evaluate and see where I am after I get some treatment. I will continue to strengthen where I need to and then go from there - I am hopeful of being fit for next week."
Fellow Englishman Simon Dyson also withdrew, complaining of back trouble after a 76 - his second in a row after he led the Spanish Open with a round to go last weekend.
