England's Oliver Wilson knows better than most not to get ahead of himself despite charging into the Madeira Islands Open halfway lead with a superb 65.
The former Ryder Cup player from Mansfield has had no fewer than nine runners-up finishes on the European Tour, but has yet to taste victory - and last season lost his card.
Wilson, a member of Nick Faldo's beaten side in Louisville four years ago who has since slumped to 475th in the world, stands 13 under par after his second bogey-free round of the week.
Swedes Magnus Carlsson and Joakim Lagergren are one behind along with Wilson's compatriot Andy Sullivan, like Lagergren a graduate from last December's qualifying school.
Wilson, who skipped that to try to resolve health issues, has made eight appearances so far this season - six as a sponsor's invite - but has made less than £20,000.
"The fact I haven't had a bogey for two rounds shows I'm playing solidly and sensibly," the 31-year-old told the Tour website.
"I actually feel like I left a few out there today. I missed three putts from inside six feet, but I made a couple of really good par saves - not from bad shots, just because the course is tricky.
"There's a long way to go and the scoring will carry on being low, but I'll keep pushing on trying to make birdies.
"There will inevitably be some mistakes at the weekend, but it's just a question of trying to limit them. You've got to be patient."
Sullivan, part of Britain and Ireland's winning Walker Cup team last September, had a best-of-the-day 64, the obvious highlight of which was an eagle on the 572-yard 11th.The halfway cut came at three under, which meant 2002 Ryder Cup hero Phillip Price missed by one and fellow Welshman Bradley Dredge, winner by eight after an amazing 60 in 2003, by four.
