Christel Boeljon: Defended her title

Christel Boeljon: Defended her title

Dutch golfer Christel Boeljon completed a successful defence of the Turkish Airways Ladies Open in Antalya.

The 24-year-old beat Finland's Ursula Wikstrom by three with a seven-under-par total which matched the tournament record.

Boeljon, who started the European Ladies Tour season with a win in Australia, started the final round with a bogey and was caught by Spain's Carlota Ciganda, who birdied two of the first three.

Ciganda fell away, however, and a run of three birdies in four holes established the three-stroke margin by the turn.

The gap came down to one when Boeljon bogeyed the 10th and Wikstrom birdied the 11th, but a double bogey by the Finn at the 15th was a blow from which she could not recover.

Boeljon could even go in the water at the last and still win comfortably.

"It means a lot," she said after her closing level-par 73. "To be able to defend is quite an honour."

Cigada tied for third with Swede Carin Koch, while 16-year-old English amateur Charley Hull, from Woburn, finished fifth in her first LET event.

"I'm really happy I didn't shoot over par all week," said Hull, winner last year of the English and Welsh stroke play titles.

She is currently fourth on the women's world amateur rankings and plays in the Curtis Cup against America at Nairn next month.

She was originally told she was not being considered after opting to go to the States to make her major debut in the Kraft Nabisco Championship instead of attending a team trial, but that decision has been overturned.
