American rookie professional Harris English shot an amazing 10-under-par 60 today in the first round of the 36-hole Open Championship qualifier at Gleneagles Country Club in Texas.
The 22-year-old from Georgia, who played in the amateur Walker Cup in Aberdeen last September, had six successive birdies from the third to turn in 29, eagled the 10th and then added further birdies on the 12th and 18th.
It gave English a four-stroke halfway lead in the race for eight places at Royal Lytham in July.
Joint second heading into the second round were Swede Daniel Chopra, Tommy 'Two Gloves' Gainey and fellow American Michael Thompson.
Chopra's compatriot Henrik Stenson, third in The Open in 2008 and 2010, returned a 68, while England's Greg Owen and Brian Davis had
66 and 69 respectively and Scot Russell Knox a 65.
