Dubawi Gold: Could take in the Sprint Challenge

Dubawi Gold: Could take in the Sprint Challenge

Dubawi Gold could step down to six furlongs in a bid to land that elusive Group One victory.

The four-year-old has been given entries in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Darley July Cup at Newmarket.

The Richard Hannon-trained colt has not run over that distance since his juvenile days and has been campaigned between seven and nine furlongs.

He was runner-up in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas last season when his biggest success came in the Group Two Betfair Celebration Mile at Glorious Goodwood.

However, he has had no success since then at home or abroad and was well-beaten in the Bet365 Mile at Sandown on his latest start.

"We ran him at Sandown and in hindsight we probably should have missed that one on that ground as soft as it was, but he's come out of it fine," said Tim Jones, racing manager to owner Andrew Tinkler.

"He's ticking over and we maintained his entry in the Lockinge, but it is extremely unlikely he will run (at Newbury on Saturday week).

"We've got races at Royal Ascot like the Queen Anne and we've put him in two Group one sprints - the Diamond Jubilee and the July Cup.

"It's really just to have the options. I don't know if that's going to be the route we will go, but he's always shown lots of speed.

"The jockeys who have ridden him have regularly said they would be fascinated to try him over sprint distances and also for the fact you've got horses like Frankel and Excelebration in the mile category.

"But then, as we keep being reminded, you've got the Black Caviars of the world in the sprint category. There's no easy way.

"As long as he (Dubawi Gold) remains in good health and continues to enjoy his racing, then we will keep trying to win a Group One with him."
