Roger Charlton has warned Bated Breath is set to swerve the Duke Of York Stakes on the opening day of York's Dante Festival on Wednesday.

The five-year-old is disputing favouritism for the Group Two contest but the likely soft ground means he is unlikely to reappear at the Knavesmire.

"He's entered at York on Wednesday but the ground is soft up there and there is the chance of more rain. I'm not keen to run him on soft ground, it doesn't suit, so I guess we'll probably bypass that and see what else comes up," Charlton told At The Races.

Bated Breath endured a successful but frustrating 2011, finishing runner-up in three Group One races namely the July Cup, Betfred Sprint Cup and the Nearctic Stakes.
