Frankel: Only three pounds short of highest rating

Frankel: Only three pounds short of highest rating

Timeform hope Frankel can prove himself the best Flat horse in their experience in 2012.

The Sir Henry Cecil-trained colt goes into the JLT Lockinge Stakes ten pounds and more ahead of his rivals on their ratings but the Halifax-based firm are looking at the bigger picture.

Timeform Chief Correspondent Jamie Lynch said: "Even though Excelebration might have an edge this time in that he's race-fit, Frankel has so much ability that it's hard to envisage a scenario in which something will beat him, and that goes for the whole season and not just the Lockinge.

"What we're looking for from Frankel this year is for him to improve his rating by three pounds to a mark of 146, which would make him the best Flat horse ever in Timeform's experience.

"It's not out of the question he'll do that in the Lockinge, though first and foremost Saturday will most likely be about getting the job done to set him up for a season that will define Frankel's legacy."

Lockinge Stakes (all ratings weight-adjusted): 157 Frankel, 147 Excelebration, 145 Strong Suit

Timeform's all-time highest-rated horses: 145 Sea Bird II, 144 Brigadier Gerard, Tudor Minstrel, 143 Frankel
