Newman: Hefty ban at Newbury

Newman: Hefty ban at Newbury

Jockey Lee Newman was hit with a 28-day ban after the Newbury stewards found him guilty of dropping his hands.

Newman was aboard 9-2 shot Russian Rave in the chrisbeekracing.com EBF Fillies' Handicap and looked to be in a prime position as he hit the front a furlong out.

His Jonathan Portman-trained mount edged ahead of Our Gal but Newman briefly appeared to look up and stop riding just under a furlong out.

While it was only a moment, the stewards decided Newman's mistake had been enough to cost the mare victory as she went down by just a head in the finish.

They found him guilty of failing to ride out on a horse that would have won and suspended him from July 28 to August 24 inclusive.
