Bolger: Delighted with the display of Trading Leather

Bolger: Delighted with the display of Trading Leather

Trading Leather looks a horse to follow after he trotted up by seven lengths in the Powerstown Stud EBF Maiden at Gowran Park.

The Jim Bolger-trained colt, who has a host of lofty entries, had shown plenty of promise when runner-up behind Aidan O'Brien's Battle Of Marengo in a Listed race on his debut earlier this month but wasted no time in going one better in some style.

Kevin Manning had the 10-11 favourite in front from the start and he won as he liked from the John Oxx-trained pair of Shadagann and Qewy.

Bolger's travelling head lad Ger Flynn said: "We are absolutely delighted with that. Kevin really likes him a lot. He had the experience of running in a Listed race the first day.

"Kevin didn't actually realise he was seven lengths in front. He didn't really get after him and he just kept lengthening all the time.

"He'll make a smashing three-year-old. He loved the ground and the trip was no issue."

Blazing Tempo (9-4 joint-favourite) followed up her Kilbeggan success earlier in the month with another win over the smaller obstacles in the Paulstown Mares Hurdle.

Making all the running, the 2011 Galway Plate winner was a length and a half too good for Burn And Turn in the hands of Ruby Walsh.

Trainer Willie Mullins said: "That mare has a huge appetite for racing. Whether we look for another hurdle like that or switch back to chasing I'm not sure yet.

"She could come back here in October (6) for the Grade Two Gowran Park Champion Chase, but it may come a bit soon so we'll look at our options."

The Fame And Glory colours of Fitri Hay were carried to victory by Andrew McNamara on the Tom Taaffe-trained Defence Of Duress (100-30) in the Thomastown Maiden Hurdle.

Formerly trained in North Yorkshire by Tom Tate, the four-year-old won by a neck from 33-1 shot Ring Ben.

"We stepped him up to two and a half miles and the much improved ground was in his favour," said Taaffe.

"We'll see what the handicapper does, but we'll look at something over a trip on decent ground."

The Eoin Griffin-trained Norther Bay (10-1) was too strong for Rodriguez by two and a quarter lengths in the Gowran Park Handicap Hurdle.

"We've been waiting all year for that ground. He's just a different horse on that ground," said Griffin.

"He's a confirmed front-runner and he likes to bowl along and get his own way.

"Compared to his chase rating he looked well-treated. We'll probably stick to hurdles for the time being."

Pat Smullen is just one behind leader Joseph O'Brien in the race for the Irish jockeys' championship after taking his tally to 71 on Dermot Weld's Fastidious (7-4 favourite) in the Gowran Park Golf & Leisure Maiden.

Emmet McNamara had his first winner since losing his claim when steering Core Element (9-1) home for trainer Shane Buggy in the Gowran Park Apprentice Handicap.
