Fine Parchment: Could go well at a price at Fakenham

Fine Parchment: Could go well at a price at Fakenham

Ian Ogg picks out a best bet, a longshot, a horse to watch and a special to note ahead of today's action.

Bet of the day

Hazy Tom: 1.20 Musselburgh

This fellow's chance almost looks too obvious for comfort as he makes his handicap debut from a mark of just 127.

Rated as high as 143 over hurdles, he got the better of Cantlow on his second start over fences at Warwick and looks to have been let in lightly with Paul Webber's charge also boasting a timber rating in the 140s.

Warwick takes some jumping so his lack of experience isn't too much of a concern as he moves into his handicap company and nor is his defeat at Towcester behind the re-opposing Creekside given the different nature of the tracks.

The one niggle is that there appears to be plenty of pace in the race which could be detrimental to this prominent racer but his yard is flying and he's taken to make the most of this initial mark.

Best longshot

Fine Parchment: 2.00 Fakenham

A disappointing turn out for this valuable handicap but it's a competitive race with Frontier Spirit seemingly laid out to try and repeat last year's win.

It may, however, be worth taking a chance with Charlie Mann's runner who had developed into a decent handicap chaser 12 months ago before losing his way in the second half of the season.

His handicap mark has dropped in tandem with his form and he's come down a couple more pounds for his run at Newbury where he hinted that he might be about to turn the corner.

That was his amateur rider's first ride under Rules which is a slight concern but he did nothing wrong at the Berkshire venue and this track could play to the strengths of the nine year old.

Horse in focus

This was a toss up between two horses at Fakenham, former Champion bumper favourite Ericht and Terre Du Vent with the mare getting the nod.

She was well backed to beat the smart pair Grumeti and Dodging Bullets on her British debut at Kempton and was making a decent fist of the job prior to falling two out.

That heavy fall may have been partly responsible for her flop in the David Nicholson Hurdle at Cheltenham but it will be hugely disappointing if she can't open her account in this significantly less competitive contest.

Special delivery

There are a raft of special bets offered every day but we're going to keep it simple at the start of the week and look to the Daily Favourites market.

Terre Du Vent is fancied to justify favouritism in the mares' hurdle while Alex Hammond's tip of the day Ericht could well oblige in the opener.

There are a couple of other strong looking market leaders on the six race card and Sky Bet go 11/8 about there being three winning favourites at the Norfolk venue.
