The seven-year-old took up the running going well over a furlong from home but had to repel a late challenge from the runner-up to score narrowly under Pat Smullen.
John Oxx's runner-up (11-8) didn't get the clearest of passages under Johnny Murtagh but picked up well in the closing stages however the line came too soon.
Northgate (33-1) ran on for third under Garry Carroll, with Hujaylea back in fourth.
Weld's son, Kris, said: "The trainer is in China but I've relayed that to him. Pat said you'll see dramatic improvement for that run.
"We'll follow the same route as last year and hopefully pick up that elusive Group One. There's lots to look forward to."
