Colour Vision won the Blue Square Levy Board Sagaro Stakes in a canter at Kempton.
Frankie Dettori's mount (9-2) didn't appear to be striding out that well in the early stages, as Electrolyser and Solar Sky helped set a decent tempo.
The Saeed Bin Suroor-trained grey still had every rival to pass turning for home, but made a sluicing move between horses with 400 yards to run and set sail for home over a furlong out.
Dettori was able to ease the former Mark Johnston-trained runner down in the final 50 yards, as Red Cadeaux (100-30) tried to close him down but it was all in vain.
Ed Dunlop's runner-up, second in the Melbourne Cup last year, ran well on his reappearance, whilst John Gosden's Thimaar (5-2 favourite) held every chance but couldn't live with the first two where it mattered.
Alan Bailey's Barbican was too keen and faded in the closing stages having travelled nicely for a long way.
Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "I can't say we were expecting that because we thought he was a bit undercooked, but he clearly runs very well fresh.
"He'll definitely be aimed for the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and we will just have to decide whether he has one more run before then, perhaps in the Henry II Stakes (Sandown)."
Red Cadeaux's trainer Ed Dunlop said: "It was a good run with a 3lb penalty.
"He's been beaten by a progressive horse, but this was very much a prep run for the Yorkshire Cup.
"All being well later in the year we'll look to be going back to the Melbourne Cup, but I wanted to get him out in the early part of the season."
