Michelangelo enjoyed a big pay-day when landing the £150,000 Tattersalls Millions 3-Y-O Cup at Newmarket under a patient William Buick ride.
The 5-6 favourite was held up at the rear of the field but made stealthy headway from the three furlong marker and was in front at the distance.
Cameron Highland (7-2) proved difficult to shake off but Michelangelo was always doing enough and went on to score by two-and-three-quarter lengths with the pair clear of Miblish (8-1) in third.
Champion jockey Paul Hanagan suffered a bad fall during the contest when his mount No Dominion clipped heels.
Sky Bet and William Hill both make the winner 16-1 for the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster.
Winning trainer John Gosden said: "It's fast ground and the distance isn't ideal for a mile and a half-bred horse. He did it will and I will look at either the Gordon Stakes or the Great Voltigeur."
