Verdict

Hefner has had plenty of chances but does have form over the C&D and was taking on much stronger opposition at Newmarket last time. It would be no surprise if he finally came good but Roger Varian's Shirocco colt SPORTING GOLD cost 130,000gns as a yearling and is a half-brother to four winners. Connections will be disappointed if he can't hold his own at a higher level in future and he's taken to make a winning debut. Handsome Ransom caught the eye on his only start at Yarmouth in the autumn and should be winning soon, while Edraaq and Elmora are open to improvement this year and also worth noting in a competitive-looking maiden.
