Verdict

OUR JONATHAN was conceding 3lb to Eton Rifles, also engaged in Ireland today, when beating that rival by two lengths in the Ayr Gold Cup on soft ground last year and again had Stuart Williams' seven-year-old behind when runner-up to Libranno in a Listed contest at Salisbury recently having earlier beaten the frustrating Regal Parade at Haydock. He is probably the one to beat though Doncaster Rover had Regal Parade and Eton Rifles behind when runner-up in this last year and should appreciate the drop back to 6f. Maarek is upped in grade after a creditable sixth in the Wokingham but should go well and is preferred to Mayson and Confessional, but Boastful and the maiden Sunrise Dance have it all to do at the weights.

Maarek 8-1 (9-10) Raced far side, mid-division headway over 1f out, soon hard ridden to challenge, stayed on same pace, 6th of 28, 2 1/4l behind Dandy Boy (9-8) at Royal Ascot 6f hcp 0-110 (2) gd.

Our Jonathan 13-8fav (9-4) Held up in mid-division, switched left over 2f out, effort between horses when badly hampered approaching final furlong, rallied and strong run inside final furlong, went 2nd last strides, unable to recover, 2nd of 9, nk behind Libranno (9-4) at Salisbury 6f Listed stks 3yo (1) gd.

Regal Parade 6-1 (9-2) In touch, effort over 2f out, weakened over 1f out, eased, 6th of 7, 25l behind Smarty Socks (9-2) at York 7f cond Stakes (3) gf in May.
