British athletes who win medals at the London 2012 Olympics will be required to wear adidas trainers on the podium.

Under an agreement between the British Olympic Association, the London organising committee (LOCOG) and the sportswear giant, medal winners must wear the full official kit including the trainers for the presentations.

Athletes are free to compete in the footwear of their own choice and provided by other manufacturers, but must change to adidas for medal ceremonies.

BOA spokesman Darryl Seibel confirmed: "It is a standard part of the Team Members Agreement and has, in fact, been in place for at least the last two Olympic Games dating back to 2004. It's not new. Other National Olympic Committees have a similar requirement."

Rules 27 and 28 of the Olympic Charter state that national Olympic committees have the "sole and exclusive authority" to determine the clothing and uniforms worn and the equipment used by athletes.

The BOA have the power to order athletes only to compete in shoes provided by their kit sponsor but do not enforce that, believing footwear is part of the athlete's equipment that they should choose themselves.

The world's fastest man Usain Bolt sparked controversy at the Beijing Olympics by flaunting his gold Puma running spikes after the 100 metres final - especially given that Puma are not Olympic sponsors.

The US Olympic Committee are believed to have a similar agreement to the BOA for their athletes to wear the full kit provided by Nike at medal ceremonies.
