Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson defied torrential rain to achieve the Olympic 'B' standard in the heptathlon and break the national junior record set by Jessica Ennis.
Former world youth champion Johnson-Thompson led after the opening day in Desenzano, Italy, after recording three new personal bests in the 100 metre hurdles, shot and 200m.
And although she was not able to repeat such heroics in poor weather on the second day in the long jump (6.14m), javelin (37.17m) or 800m (two minutes 18.89 seconds), her total of 6,007 points smashed her personal best by more than 200 points.
It also surpassed the 'B' standard of 5,950 and Ennis's junior record of 5,910 from 2005, while being within sight of the 'A' standard of 6,150.
But the 19-year-old from Liverpool tweeted: "I've let myself down...I will be attempting to get the Olympic A standard again soon. It's within me."
Johnson-Thompson finished third overall behind Sofia Ifadidou of Greece and France's Blandine Maisonnier, with fellow Britons Louise Wood, Phyllis Agbo and Katy Marchant 11th, 13th and 18th respectively.
Former Olympic bronze medallist Kelly Sotherton pulled up injured in the 200m, the final event of day one, on Saturday.
