Great Britain's volleyball debut at the Olympics will see the men's and women's teams field a wide range of experience.

The men have selected Jason Haldane, who turns 41 four days before London 2012 begins, while the women have picked 18-year-old Savanah Leaf - who only joined the team in April.

Ben Pipes, 25, will captain the men while Glasgow's Lynn Beattie leads the women.

Team GB chef de mission Andy Hunt paid tribute to the rapid development of the sport in Britain and the dedication of the athletes, with the women's team

having a particularly difficult time as they were not centrally funded like their male counterparts.

"It has been an incredible feat and achievement as the British Volleyball Association was only formed six years ago and it is great it has come to fruition,'' he said.

"It has been a tough and difficult journey for the athletes, coaches and governing body to get to this point but through that adversity and amazing determination they will go to the Olympic Games.''

Haldane, who has a British father and transferred allegiance from Canada in 2008, was elated to have finally achieved his Olympic dream.

"It has been stressful for the last three months because realistically I've been working for the last 20 years to reach this point,'' he said.

"It is a relief beyond words and I am just honoured to be competing for GB now and to perform for the country.''

London-born Leaf, who moved to California before she was 10 but interrupted her university studies to return home in an bid to qualify for the team, was equally delighted.

"I only came in this year and the coach (Audrey Cooper) said 'Just work as hard as you can because it is going to be tough to get into the team because

everyone is so tight','' she said.

"I feel like I have fitted in well and everyone was open in allowing me to be part of the team and I gave it all and I am so proud it paid off and I can represent my family and the country.

"I have not been able to do that because I have been in America for so long."

Men's squad: B Pipes, K O'Malley, D Bakare, N French, M Plotyczer, C Lamont, M McGivern, P Bakare, J Haldane, A Pink, D Hunter, J Miller.

Women's squad: L Wicks, C Michel, L Beattie, R Bragg, J Morgan, G Carter, S Leaf, R Laybourne, M Bertelli, L Reid, J Sandell, J Taylor.
