Stockdale: Battling back from injury

British showjumper Tim Stockdale took another significant step on his comeback trail when he finished second in the St Gallen Longines Grand Prix.

The Northamptonshire-based rider was Great Britain's star performer during the St Gallen FEI Nations Cup round in Switzerland two days ago.

Stockdale, who fractured three vertebrae in his neck when he fell from a horse last October, jumped two clear rounds on Fresh Direct Kalico Bay as Britain recorded their best Nations Cup result so far this season by finished equal-second.

And the 47-year-old was back on top form among a star-studded grand prix field today.

He again went clear twice with Kalico Bay, but his jump-off time of 51.64 seconds was not quite enough to eclipse German winner Marcus Ehning and Plot Blue.

Stockdale, though, collected just over £32,000 for his efforts, while two other British challengers also finished in the top 10.

Scott Brash, riding Intertoy Z, was sixth, with Michael Whitaker taking 10th spot.

Sunday's collective British performances continued a strong run of results on both the grand prix and Global Champions' Tour circuits this year, and augurs well for their chances at London 2012.

Selectors Rob Hoekstra and Di Lampard are due to name their four-strong Olympic team in early July, with competition for places intense.
