Great Britain's Alison Young won a surprise gold medal at the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta on Saturday.

The 25-year-old was a late pick for Team GB's sailing squad but proved her worth in Weymouth by winning the Laser Radial class.

Young's second-place finish in the medal race was enough to secure gold and puts her in good stead for this summer's Olympics.

''It is pretty cool to win,'' she said.

''It was a good medal race out there and I am pretty happy to come away with the win.

''It is a good confidence boost going forward to the Games and I will be looking to build on a few things between now and then.

''There is a few little things we can tweak and work on. We'll have a look back at this regatta and see what we can move forward with.''

Young finished the medal race behind Ireland's Annalise Murphy, whose victory saw her secure the bronze medal.

''It's brilliant, I am so happy,'' said the Dublin sailor.

''I won a bronze medal here last year as well.

''It is the Olympic venue and is a huge confidence boost. I can't really get better than medalling here.''

Earlier in the day Australia's Tom Slingsby once again flexed his muscles in the Laser class, winning the medal race and the event.

Skandia Team GBR's Paul Goodison finished just off the podium positions in fourth, before Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell took home silver in the men's 470 class.

Britain's Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark took bronze in the women's 470 class.
