Anthony Davidson has returned home to continue his rehabilitation after breaking his back during the Le Mans 24 Hours on Saturday.
Davidson crashed out of the iconic race after five hours in his Toyota TS030 Hybrid, clipping a Ferrari that propelled him into the air and into a barrier.
Although Davidson clambered out of the car, admitting to feeling claustrophobic in the battered cockpit, he was taken to a local hospital where the injury was discovered after x-rays and tests.
Following four nights under observation, the 33-year-old former Formula One driver and Sky Sports F1 pundit was allowed to fly back to England.
Via his Twitter account, and delivering a thumbs-up sign as he lay on a stretcher beside the aircraft, Davidson said: "Home time today! Le Mans airport to Oxford via medical plane."
After an engine failure wrecked his 2010 bid two hours from the chequered flag and after finishing fourth last year, on both occasions with Peugeot, Davidson has vowed to return and triumph.
He added: "You've been cruel once again Le Mans, but I'll stand on your top step one day."
