Richard Kilty and Gareth Warburton were today set to lodge formal appeals against their omission from Britain's Olympics squad, while Marilyn Okoro has threatened to go further still and quit the sport.
UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee admitted on Sunday that he was expecting "a heap of appeals" from "desperate" athletes when the team was announced on Tuesday afternoon, and although a heap may not materialise, Kilty and Warburton have indicated their intention to appeal.
Kilty had hoped to be selected in the 200m, while Warburton was seeking a place in the 800m alongside Andrew Osagie and Michael Rimmer.
"The reason they gave me was due to lack of current form," Kilty told BBC Radio Five Live.
"That's a bit hypocritical because what they are judging that from is the Olympic trials where I actually had a viral infection diagnosed by the UK Athletics doctors and I was advised not to run by them.
"I feel I am capable of running very fast now - the only reason I didn't at the trials was because of the virus. There are three spots available for the Olympic 200m. Two of them are already taken, and the only man eligible for the third spot was me."
Warburton failed to achieve the second 'A' standard time he needed at last week's European Championships in Helsinki, but wrote on Twitter: "Thanks everyone for the support over the last couple of hours, been overwhelming! Clearly gutted with the decision but I WILL be appealing."
Any appeal must be lodged within 24 hours of the team announcement and then heard within 48 hours. The appeals panel consists of UKA chairman Ed Warner, UKA president Lynn Davies and an independent barrister.
However, such appeals would seem likely to fail given that they can only be based on whether facts have been overlooked or the selection panel has not adhered to their published policy.
In Kilty's case, while he does have the required standards to be eligible for selection, the panel will not select any athlete "who it has good reason to think will be uncompetitive at the Games due to...injury, illness or lack of recent form."
As expected, the women's 800m produced the biggest talking point with Lynsey Sharp the sole athlete selected, despite not possessing the 'A' standard, unlike Okoro, Jenny Meadows, Jemma Simpson and Emma Jackson.
Meadows, who has not raced all year due to injury, has changed her mind and will not appeal despite feeling the decision is "very, very strange", but Simpson is weighing up her options and Okoro told Van Commenee she will quit athletics - despite actually being named in the 4x400m relay squad.
"She indicated she would quit, but I want to see how that goes in the next few days," Van Commenee said. "I don't expect an athlete to be rational after receiving the news that you are not part of your favourite event."
