Kyle Lohse and the short-handed St Louis Cardinals won for the sixth time in seven games with a 6-3 success over the Chicago Cubs which held their lead in the National League wild-card race.

The Kansas City Royals were eliminated from play-off contention as the Cleveland Indians romped to a 15-4 win with Carlos Santana hitting two homers and driving in five runs.

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 and the Texas Rangers won 3-2 against the Seattle Mariners.
