World Cup games will now be moved from Whitehaven

World Cup games will now be moved from Whitehaven

The 2013 World Cup organisers have been forced to abandon plans to stage two group fixtures at the proposed Pow Beck Stadium in Whitehaven because of delays over the project.

Scotland were due to face Tonga and Italy at the ground but those matches will be switched to an alternative venue after Copeland Borough Council were unable to guarantee completion of the new stadium on time.

World Cup general manager Sally Bolton said: "When selecting Copeland as a host, RLWC2013's selection committee were very supportive of the idea of building a new stadium in Whitehaven as a way of growing the game in West Cumbria.

"The fact that Copeland Borough Council are no longer able to deliver that is disappointing."

Bolton said the committee have a contingency plan and will announce replacement venues shortly, while organisers are also expected to confirm the venues for the semi-finals and final soon.
