Liam Finn: Set new record

Liam Finn: Set new record

Liam Finn set a new record for consecutive goalkicks as Featherstone cruised into the last four of the Northern Rail Cup with a 60-12 win over Keighley in Thursday night's quarter-final at Cougar Park.

The former Halifax and Dewsbury half-back, who will captain Ireland against England Knights on Saturday, converted all seven of his side's first-half tries to extend his sequence to 38 and equal the record set by Batley's Barry Eaton in 2003.

Finn then added three more conversions in the second half to smash the record and also scored one of Rovers' 10 tries to finish with a personal haul of 24 points, taking his career tally past the 1,500 mark.

His remarkable run began with four goals in Featherstone's win over York on May 19, since when he landed 10 out of 10 against Dewsbury, eight from eight against French club Pia and nine from nine against Hunslet.

Rovers were a class apart as they made it six successive wins to edge closer to a first appearance in the Northern Rail Cup final.

Anthony England, Jack Briscoe, Finn, Tim Spears, Andy Bostock, Andy Kain and Ian Hardman all scored tries before half-time, when they led 42-0.

Keighley rallied briefly when stand-off Jy-Mel Coleman scored his side's first points with a try early in the second half, goaled by Danny Lawton, and they kept the champions at bay until the 59th minute when James Lockwood added an eighth try.

Finn's eighth goal of the night enabled him to go past Eaton's record before Kain scored his second try and Tom Saxton went over for the visitors' 10th of the match, with Finn taking his goal tally to 10.

The Cougars grabbed a late consolation when scrum-half Sam Obst went over for a second try and Lawton kicked his second goal.
