Mick Potter: Back as Bradford coach

Mick Potter: Back as Bradford coach

Mick Potter is to return to coach crisis club Bradford Bulls in Sunday's match against London Broncos.

The former Catalan Dragons and St Helens head coach was among the victims of a spate of redundancies at the ailing Super League club on Monday but and initially declined the chance to stay on in a voluntary capacity.

Forty eight hours later, however, Potter told newly-appointed acting chief executive Gary Tasker that he was prepared to continue in the role without pay.

Assistant coaches Francis Cummins and Lee St Hilaire will also be back at work when the Bulls players report for training tomorrow to prepare for the home game against the Broncos.

"It's a great gesture from Mick and his team," said Tasker, who is also working for expenses only as a short-term replacement for Ryan Duckett.Potter said he made his mind up to return after meeting the players socially on Tuesday night.

"We felt obliged to do something," he said. "It was the feeling from the players at a social gathering we went to.

"The players were pretty down and needed somebody to help them put the game on this weekend. There was a lot of heated feeling and mixed emotions.

"They just wanted some guidance. I want the Bulls to be successful and we decided to play a small part in getting the game on."

Potter said the club's conditioner Geoff Evans has also offered his services, although it is likely the club will only have a skeleton staff available.

"It probably won't be quite as normal but it's about continuity and getting a bit of stability, even if it's only for one more week," he added.

"We want go back to what we do well and then we'll probably go back to where we were.

"Hopefully the club can find an investor who would be acceptable to the RFL."

Tasker was appointed earlier in the day by administrator Brendan Guilfoyle, who had sacked 15 members of staff in a major cost-cutting exercise.

"I am very grateful for Gary stepping into this role without pay - just expenses," said Guilfoyle.

"He ran the club 10 years ago and is passionate about helping Bradford Bulls to survive. He has made it clear that he's happy to step aside as soon as he's not needed."

Tasker spent 20 years at Bradford, where he worked his way through the ranks to become general manager, before being appointed as general manager of Super League in 2000.

He later joined the Rugby Football League as director of club support and European development and had a brief spell in rugby union at Sale as commercial director last year.

Guilfoyle had also hoped to persaude former coach Brian Noble to return but whether he plays a role now remains to be seen.

Guilfoyle, who says he has no money to pay the players' wages which are due later this month, revealed yesterday that he had received interest from a potential investor and remains optimistic about being able to save the club from liquidation.

"I'm hopeful but I've got a very tight deadline of next Tuesday," he said.
