Chris Paterson: Farewell match

Chris Paterson: Farewell match

Chris Paterson will grace Murrayfield for the final time as a player on Saturday as the retiring former Scotland international features in Edinburgh's final match of the season.

The 34-year-old, who has a record 109 caps and 809 points for Scotland, will start at full-back in Edinburgh's RaboDirect PRO12 clash with Treviso.

Paterson, who is set to take up a new non-playing role with Edinburgh and the Scottish Rugby Union, is one of six players named in the squad who will play their last game for Edinburgh, but scrum-half Mike Blair misses out in a playing farewell due to a shoulder injury.

"I've always said that I want to go out playing the best rugby I possibly can and I'm ready to move on to an exciting future," Paterson said.

"My retirement is tinged with sadness but my overriding and lasting feelings are ones of happiness, enjoyment and fulfilment, having achieved far more than I ever thought I would and could have in 14 years of the job.

"I'm delighted to be involved in this game and, as always, have done my best in training and will do my best in the game.

"We've had a great season in Europe and have a chance on Saturday to remedy our league form and finish the season well, both for Edinburgh and me personally."

Edinburgh lost their Heineken Cup semi-final to Ulster last Saturday and are to field a near full strength side.

The other five departing players involved in the matchday squad have been named on the bench - replacement front-row forwards Andrew Kelly, Kyle Traynor and Jack Gilding, back-row Alan MacDonald and fly-half Phil Godman.

Jim Thompson joins Blair in missing the farewell due to his participation in the Glasgow Sevens with Scotland.
