England finished in third place overall in the Sevens World Series after narrowly losing to Australia in the Plate final at the Marriott London Sevens on Sunday.

Australia claimed the victory 14-12 thanks to tries from captain Ed Jenkins and Ed Stubbs.

England's scores came through Mat Turner, whose fifth try of the weekend saw him finish as the season leader with 38 from the nine events - one ahead of team-mate Dan Norton, and debutant Jeff Williams, but it was not enough as Dan Bibby missed with a late penalty.

Defending champions New Zealand sealed top spot in the overall standings - their 10th series title - by reaching the semi-finals, although they could not cap that by winning in London after losing to Fiji in the last four.

Fiji went on to take the title with a 38-15 win over Samoa as they finished second in the overall series standings, six points behind New Zealand.

England head coach Ben Ryan said after the tournament: "We're proud of our efforts over the last 12 months and I'm really enthusiastic about the potential in the side. We'll stay together as a group and I'm sure we'll improve."

Wales beat Scotland 27-5 to win the third tier Bowl competition with tries from Richard Smith, Alex Walker, Dan Fish and Rhys Patchel.
