Ben McCalman: Will stay with the Western Force

Ben McCalman: Will stay with the Western Force

Australia forward Ben McCalman has re-signed with the Australian Rugby Union as one of three players to recommit to the Western Force.

McCalman signed a one-year deal with the ARU, while Force team-mates Richard Brown and Brett Sheehan will also remain with the Super Rugby side for next year.

McCalman has been a regular with the Wallabies, making 21 appearances since debuting against South Africa in 2010.

Used mostly as a number eight, the versatile 24-year-old has also played at open and blindside flanker for Robbie Deans' men, while making several appearances as a second-rower for the Force.

McCalman, who is sidelined with a shoulder injury for at least another six weeks, said he wanted to play against the British and Irish Lions when they tour Australia next year.

"Playing against the Lions is definitely a goal," McCalman said.

"Continuing with the Wallabies was a big motivation to stay in Australia.

"I've already been lucky enough to enjoy some special moments in the gold jersey. Hopefully there are more to come."

Delighted Wallabies coach Deans, whose team take on Wales in the second of three Tests on Saturday, hailed McCalman's reliability.

"Ben's record speaks for itself. He's totally committed in every game he plays, never shirks any responsibility and is a bloke his team-mates know that they can always rely on," Deans said.

"He might not be perceived as a flashy player, but Ben gets the job done. We've asked a lot of him at times, but he has never let Australia or the gold jersey down."
