England Saxons wing Richard Haughton has joined Championship newcomers Jersey.

Haughton, now 31, spent most of his career with Saracens before embarking on a two-season stint with their Aviva Premiership rivals Wasps.

He is now to play at the lower level, the Championship being the second tier of English rugby.

Jersey rugby director Ben Harvey said: "Richard has played rugby at a high level, and he impressed me with his enthusiasm for joining Jersey for an exciting first season of Championship rugby.

"Although he has connections here through his wife's family, this was first and foremost a rugby decision for Richard, enabling him to take the next step in his career."

Haughton has also played in more than 30 International Rugby Board sevens tournaments for England and was a 2006 Commonwealth Games silver medallist.
