Nikola Matawalu: Glasgow move

Nikola Matawalu: Glasgow move

Glasgow are set to make their seventh summer signing with Fiji international Nikola Matawalu poised to join the club, subject to passing a medical and obtaining a work permit.

The Warriors lost to Leinster in the RaboDirect PRO12 semi-finals last season and have moved to improve their squad in the last month.

Matawalu, 23, has six caps for Fiji and the scrum-half is set to move to the Scotstoun Stadium from the Navy Rugby Club.

Glasgow head coach Gregor Townsend hailed the acquisition as 'really exciting'.

He said: "I'm delighted he's agreed to come to Scotstoun and he'll provide some serious competition in the back line.

"Niko is a really exciting signing for us. He's quick, strong and is one of those types of players that can do something a bit different, the unexpected."

Matawalu will compete with the likes of Scotland international Chris Cusiter as well as Henry Pyrgos and Murray McConnell for the scrum-half position, and is ready to link up with his new team-mates.

"It's a very exciting time to be coming to Glasgow and I'm really looking forward to joining up with the rest of the Warriors squad," he said.

"Obviously it's going to be a massive change from playing in the southern hemisphere but I'm really looking forward to the challenge."
