Defending champions Czech Republic stormed into the Fed Cup semi-finals with a 4-1 triumph over Germany in Stuttgart, while Italy, Russia and Serbia also secured last-four berths.
The Czechs were on the verge of victory after Iveta Benesova and Petra Kvitova won Saturday's opening singles, and wasted no time cementing their progress on Sunday.
Wimbledon champion Kvitova overcame Sabine Lisicki 6-7 (2/7) 6-4 6-1 to give the visitors an unassailable 3-0 lead, with Angelique Kerber then restoring some pride for the Germans with a 6-4 6-4 win against Lucie Hradecka before Benesova linked up with Barbora Zahlavova Strycova to beat Julia Georges and Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3 7-6 (7/4) in the doubles.
Kvitova, after claiming her eighth straight Fed Cup singles win to clinch the tie, told the tournament's official website: "I had trouble with my return at the beginning and it was really a long time when I know what I had to do.
"It was in the middle of the second set so I'm happy that I got it and I knew how I can return her serve. She played very well and I'm really happy that we have three points already."
The Czechs will face Italy in the semi-finals in April after the hosts squeezed past Ukraine 3-2 in a tight encounter in Biella.
The tie was finely poised after Saturday's singles, Italy's Sara Errani and Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko having got a point on the board for their respective countries with victories over Kateryna Bondarenko and Francesca Schiavone.
Schiavone hit back on Sunday to edge Italy ahead again by seeing off Bondarenko 6-7 (6/8) 7-5 6-4, only for Ukraine to draw level when Errani retired injured while trailing Tsurenko 6-1 3-0.
That meant there was all to play for in the doubles, and it eventually went Italy's way after a topsy-turvy encounter saw Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci outlast Tsurenko and Olga Savchuk 7-5 0-6 6-1.
The second semi-final will see Russia face Serbia after they secured 3-2 wins over Spain and Belgium respectively.
Svetlana Kuznetsova clinched the tie for Russia against Spain in Moscow by beating Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-2 4-6 6-3 in the final singles rubber.
Maria Sharapova and Kuznetsova won their singles matches on Saturday to give Russia the upper hand, but Carla Suarez Navarro got Spain back in it with a 6-0 6-3 win against Nadia Petrova - a late replacement for Sharapova - before Kuznetsova got the hosts over the line.
Nuria Llagostera Vives and Arantxa Parra Santonja reduced the deficit to 3-2 by winning the doubles match for Spain when Kuznetsova and Petrova retired with their progress already assured.
Petrova admitted it had been difficult for her to step in at late notice to face Suarez Navarro when Sharapova pulled out suffering from a cold.
"It was obviously frustrating to know that I had to play just two hours before the match," Petrova said.
"Physiologically it was very difficult for me to prepare because I was in such a rush to get to the warm up and getting myself ready to play so when I got onto the court, I could not get my thoughts together."
Meanwhile, an under-strength Serbia side - missing Ana Ivanovic for the tie and having lost Jelena Jankovic to injury ahead of Sunday's action - edged past Belgium 3-2.
Bojana Jovanovski and Aleksandra Krunic defeated Yanina Wickmayer and Alison Van Uytvanck 7-6 (7/2) 4-6 6-1 in the decisive doubles rubber in Charleroi.
The tie had been in the balance with honours ending even after the singles, Wickmayer winning both of her matches for the hosts but Jankovic and Jovanovski both getting the better of Kirsten Flipkens.
