Simona Halep: Knocked out in the semis

Simona Halep: Knocked out in the semis

Qualifier Kiki Bertens upset fifth seed Simona Halep to reach the final of the Fes Grand Prix against Laura Pous-Tio.

Bertens, from Holland, beat her fellow 20-year-old Halep 6-3 6-4 in 82 minutes, breaking once in the first set and twice in the second.

She also beat sixth seed Chanelle Scheepers earlier in the week and her giant-killing exploits were rewarded by a final against a fellow unseeded player as Pous-Tio survived a second-set dip to beat Mathilde Johansson in over two hours.

The 27-year-old produced a dominant display in the first set, breaking serve four times on her way to a 6-1 win.

Johansson, a lucky loser from the qualifying competition, responded impressively with three breaks in the second but the third was a closer affair, Pous-Tio breaking late on to complete a 6-1 2-6 7-5 success.
