Heather Watson booked her place in the second round of the Estoril Open with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Czech Lucie Hradecka.
The British number three took advantage of Hradecka's poor serving in the first set, breaking three times to two as the Czech sent down six double faults.
Both players tidied up their delivery in the second set but Watson was still able to break twice to clinch the win in an hour and 33 minutes.
The world number 115, who came through qualifying to reach the main draw, will next face another Czech - fourth seed Petra Cetkovska - after she crushed Russian Alexandra Panova 6-2 6-1.
However, there was disappointment for British number one Elena Baltacha, who went down 7-6 6-1 to second seed Maria Kirilenko.
Both players were broken three times in the first set on the way to a tie-breaker, where the Russian proved the stronger to edge it 8-6.
The disappointment of losing the set weighed heavily on the Scot, who was broken a further three times in the next as the world number 19 went through in one hour and 46 minutes.
