Veteran Tommy Haas marched into the second round of the BMW Open in Munich after taking just 51 minutes to beat fellow German Michael Berrer 6-0 6-2.

The 34-year-old Haas dropped only three points on his serve throughout the match and broke his opponent five times in total to book a round two clash with top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Eighth seed Marcos Baghdatis claimed his first clay-court victory of the season with a 6-1 3-6 6-3 win over Germany's Tobias Kamke, and sixth seed Mikhail Youzhny beat another German, Philipp Petzschner, 7-5 7-5.

Ernests Gulbis beat Xavier Malisse 6-4 6-2, Potito Starace advanced with a 6-3 7-6 (7/3) win over Daid Goffin, and Sergiy Stakhovskiy beat Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 7-6 (6/3) 6-3.

Matthias Bachinger was a 7-6 (6/3) 6-2 winner over Alejandro Falla while three qualifiers also advanced with victories for Dustin Brown, Marinko Matosevic and Robert Farah, who beat seventh seed Nikolay Davydenko 6-3 6-2.
