Kim Clijsters: The 2012 US Open will be her last tournament

Former world No.1 Kim Clijsters has confirmed that she will retire for good after this year's US Open.

Clijsters had previously stated that 2012 would be her last season in the sport and she has now confirmed that the New York tournament, which she has won on three occasions, will be her last.

The 28-year-old Belgian first retired in May 2007 to start a family, but she returned to the sport in 2009 and won the US Open that year and in 2010.

She made no secret of the fact that the main motivation for coming out of retirement was to challenge for the one major title to elude her - Wimbledon.

"As it stands I will end my career at the US Open, That is where I enjoyed my greatest triumphs and it is a very special place for me," said Clijsters, who is married to US basketball player Brian Lynch.

"The stadium is only about 45 minutes away from our house in the United States and my parents-in-law will be able to be present."
