Andy Murray was beaten in his final warm-up match ahead of the French Open.
The British number one lost 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/4) to Ernests Gulbis on Thursday at the Masters Guinot Mary Cohr exhibition event in Paris.
Murray started by far the better and two early breaks saw him into a 4-1 lead. He also led 40-0 in the sixth game before the wheels came off.
Gulbis, down at 92nd in the world rankings, hit back to level at 4-4 before taking the set in a tie-break.
In the second set, the Latvian led by a break but Murray, who at times still seemed to be troubled by back pain which has affected him in recent weeks, fought back and actually held three set points in the 10th game.
However, Gulbis held firm and clinched the match in another breaker.
Both men will now head to Roland Garros where the main draw gets under way on Sunday.
The day's other matches at the Paris Country Club both went to champions tie-breaks.
Fernando Verdasco beat Vasek Pospisil 7-5 3-6 10-4, while Stanislas Wawrinka edged out Marcos Baghdatis 7-5 5-7 10-7.
