Gael Monfils: Knee injury

Gael Monfils has been forced out of the French Open due to injury.

The French number three has cited a right knee problem as his reason for withdrawing from his home Grand Slam.

Monfils, who had been set to be seeded 12th for the tournament, will have his place on Friday's draw taken by a lucky loser from qualifying.

The former junior champion at Roland Garros made the semi-finals of the tournament back in 2008.

Earlier this week he suffered a surprise to defeat American Brian Baker in Nice when the injury troubled him. He has now been advised to rest for three weeks meaning he could be fit again for Wimbledon.

French hopes will now lie mainly on the shoulders of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and GIlles Simon.
